The Week In Geek: ‘Prometheus’; Too Little, Too Late to Help the ‘Alien’ Legacy?

Excerpt: [The Week in Geek is a weekly Tuesday column that plunges headfirst into a deep pool of genre geekiness without ever coming up for air.]I’ll never see ‘Alien’ with the eyes of someone who saw it theatrically in 1979. I’ve seen beautiful repertory prints and flawless digital transfers, but I didn’t see ‘Alien’ until ‘Aliens’ was hitting home video. By the time I saw the film, sometime in early 1987, I’d already seen it imitated (and sometimes parodied) elsewhere. The film made an impact on me, because it’s a great film, but I’ve always wondered how much more I might…

Excerpt: French filmmaker Louis Leterrier hit the action scene with the first two ‘Transporter’ flicks and the odd Jet Li thriller ‘Unleashed’ (aka ‘Danny the Dog’) before hitting the Marvel-ous big time with ‘The Incredible Hulk’ and then tackling Mount Olympus on ‘Clash of the Titans.’ So what’s next for the upwardly-mobile Monseuir Leterrirer? According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be a big-time hush-hush sci-fi apocalypse piece known simply as ‘G.’ Because we all know how people adore single-letter titles like ‘M,’ ‘Q,’ and ‘Z.’Universal says the flick will have shades of ‘Taken’ (cool) and ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ (not…

Excerpt: By now most of you have probably seen the 1997 documentary ‘Trekkies,’ about folks who go a bit overboard when it comes to their love of all things ‘Star Trek.’ We’ve always found ‘Trekkies’ to be a ridiculously addictive film, partly because it’s fun to watch people lose themselves so completely in a science fiction franchise, but also because of its positive message (be who you are no matter how many people may think you’re nuts) and the way with which this one piece of entertainment brings so much joy and happiness to the lives of millions of people worldwide. It…

Excerpt: John Scalzi’s ‘Old Man’s War’ series of novels began only six years ago, but it already boasts a glowing reputation among sci-fi fans as being one of, if not the, best series in recent memory. Fan base aside, it’s kind of hard to argue when three of the novels in a four-part series have been nominated for Best Novel at the Hugo Awards. And when a series gains that kind of consistent critical acclaim, it’s only a matter of time before Hollywood decides it wants in on the action.Paramount Pictures has bought the rights to the ‘Old Man’s War’ series…

Great Fake Trailers for B-Movies That Never Existed
Posted on February 25th, 2011

Faux movie trailers are nothing new, but when a series comes along that is well-crafted, amusing and made by a special effects makeup artist with over 50 titles to his credit … well, you can’t help but stand up and take notice. FX veteran Michael Deak — who has done a bit of acting too — has worked width=”500″>

Skynet Is Now Real — Are Terminators That Far Behind? (VIDEO)

Excerpt: In the ‘Terminator’ universe, Skynet was built as a Global Digital Defense Network, an artificial intelligence that could command all computerized military hardware. The military installed Skynet because it would remove human error and guarantee faster, more efficient reaction time. It also guaranteed nuclear armageddon when it gained self-awareness and forced the surviving humans into slave labor. So that part was bad. But the first thing, the network command of all computerized hardware, that was a good thing, right?Hey, guess what, everybody! That first thing is starting to happen, and its name is RoboEarth!
